The Course

The Bar Exam Course spans 15 weeks, with successful candidates typically dedicating at least 20 hours per week. If this isn’t feasible for you, early enrolment lets you start preparing in advance, helping to lighten your workload during the formal course period.
The Bar Exam Course is a comprehensive guide to preparing for the exam. The Guide outlines the recommended study techniques and approach. The Study Plan breaks down the content into manageable weekly sections. Practice questions with example answers each week allow you to test your understanding and refine your exam technique. Weekly seminars cover key topics and provide expert guidance on study and exam strategies. Throughout the course, you’ll take four Practice Exams using ExamSoft technology (the same platform used by VicBar), simulating the real exam environment. Individualised feedback on these exams is available for an additional fee.  During the revision period, three additional practice exams are available.
Our custom-built online learning platform lets you save your answers, build out template answers, track your progress, identify weaknesses, and stay organised with personalised to-do lists—ensuring your preparation is as efficient and effective as possible.

Features

Study plan and guide
The 15 week Study Plan identifies what to read each week. It breaks the VicBar Reading Guide into manageable portions, providing a structured way to cover all content and remain on track.  The BEC Guide provides the study technique to apply to this material.  Adopting the BEC technique promotes development of ‘deep knowledge’ of the content as well the ability to answer in the required style, in the time constraints of the exam.  The Guide also incorporates the most up to date and compelling research on success and achievement to create a holistic approach to bar exam preparation. 
Practice Questions
Each week, answering the Practice Questions requires you to transform the abstract knowledge you have gained from the readings into the format you need to deploy in the exam.  This consolidates your learning and deepens your understanding of the topics.  By analysing the structure and content of the example answers and comparing them to your own answers, you can learn what makes up a successful answer and identify areas you can improve upon.  This process of practicing and perfecting exam style answers is the study technique which correlates most highly with success.
Seven Practice Exams
During the course, you will sit four Practice Exams using Examplify software, the same technology used for the exam itself. These exams promote development of issue spotting, answer technique and time management skills – the critical foundations for exam success.  Most candidates adjust the way they study following their first Practice Exam as they develop a more concrete understanding of the demands of the exam and the type of preparation required. You will have the option (subject to availability) of paying to receive marked feedback on these exams. All candidates receive example answers.  Three further exams with example answers will be available during the revision period.
Community
Our online community provides ongoing support, motivation, and access to a diverse network of fellow candidates across all practice areas. In 2024, we welcomed 135 enrolees, fostering a collaborative environment where you can connect, share insights, and form study groups to enhance your preparation. You’ll be encouraged to ask questions and contribute answers, with the collective experience of the cohort driving valuable, high-level discussions. Whether you’re studying from interstate, overseas, or anonymously, you’ll feel supported and motivated by a group facing the same intellectual and emotional challenges.
Online Learning System
The online learning system has been carefully designed to meet the specific needs of bar exam candidates and encourage those habits and practices which correlate most strongly with success.  The practice question database allows you to develop your answer technique, see example answers, build out template answers, generate your own question lists, and practice under timed conditions.  You can also utilise customisable to do lists, track your progress, assess how you are spending your time, identify your areas of weakness and improve upon them.
Seminars
Weekly recorded seminars cover course content, answer style, study and exam technique.  The introductory seminar identifies the essential skills required to pass the exam and the tools you can use to develop those skills.  The weekly seminars cover the big topics and break down the components of better and worse answers.  Around the time of the Practice Exams, we discuss and reflect upon exam and study technique.  Throughout, you will be encouraged to adopt specific study and exam techniques that our research has shown correlate most highly with success.

Meet Caitlin Dwyer, Founder of The Bar Exam Course

Caitlin Dwyer passed the bar exam on her first attempt in May 2017. Driven by the desire to share her learnings and help others avoid common pitfalls, Caitlin launched the first Bar Exam Course (BEC) in November 2017. Since then, she has balanced a successful career as a barrister with a deep, ongoing commitment to the continuous improvement of the BEC.

Caitlin collaborates with barristers across a wide range of practice areas to ensure that the course materials are of the highest standard. She has dedicated countless hours to analyzing the pathways to success and failure, developing study tools, and offering tailored advice to help her students overcome the unique challenges they face. Caitlin takes immense pride in the course she has built, which combines her expertise, innovation, and a strong desire to see others succeed.
